The Center for Enterprise and Society’s latest analysis “The
Cost of Political Instability” assesses the impact of recent political
instability on the economy and on Bangladesh’s business community. The study draws on data from our recent survey
of 525 managing directors and chief executive officers conducted in cooperation
with Sirius Marketing and Social Research Ltd.

Thanks to the authors for such an interesting and in-depth analysis of the hartal situation and it's effect on the economy. From a research perspective, I was happy to read how businesses adapt to such situation. This 'other' picture is rarely stated in research in Bangladesh. It is important to acknowledge the other side of the coin in research so that we give emphasis to different perspectives.
ReplyDeleteFrom an anthropological-linguistic point of view something caught my eye from the first the introductory lines of the study. The use of the word hartal seems to have changed it's usage and requires contexualization in the current day situation. I bring this forward in reference to a comment from one of the BNP high command on an electronic media recently where he used the term 'peacuful picketing'. The word picketing is normally meant to be peaceful demonstration, but the current political culture of the country requires some sort of reconfirmation! I believe our political culture has led to, at some instances, linguistic ambiguity, if I may call that!
