Bangladesh Bank not electronically secure

Bangladesh Bank exposed to hackers by cheap switches, no firewall: cops

The big-money electronic heist that scourged the country has identified some basic shortcomings of the Bangladesh Bank itself, which contributed to the international siphoning. The shocking absence of a Firewall security to prevent cyber attacks. Furthermore, cheap USD $10 switches to network computers in turn connected to the SWIFT global payment network has piled up lax security.

Had it been so that these measures were installed, it would be difficult for hackers to do their tricks and also notify authorities quicker. The inexpensive switches, standard ones costing hundred dollars more, thrusts us into the reality of being unable to discover the hackers activities along with their possible location. SWIFT facility should have been an isolated network, with high-standard switches.

SWIFT officials have been reported, not to have advised on these deficiencies before the heist. Although USD $81 million was lost from the federal reserves, USD $951 million was targetted, but was blocked off by the system.
