Emerging IT

Since the laydown of the foundation for "Digital Bangladesh 2021" in 2008, Bangladesh has attracted electronic giants and business consulting brands to Bangladesh, ranked satisfactorily amongst outsourcing countries and managed competitive freelance work above some top fully IT-enabled economies. The figures for IT in Bangladesh stand at US$ 600 million total value, including 1500 firms and 40 offshore development centers. Samsung has setup research and development center in Dhaka; Bangladesh has been ranked 26th out of 50 outsourcing destinations; and it is ahead of China, Canada and UK in terms of freelance work.

Bangladesh has a tremendously adoptive youth population who are very receptive of emerging technology. Apart from the already competing and trained IT experts domestically, the World Bank and ADB has taken up projects to train 59,000 IT professionals in the coming 3-4 years. The government has complemented this through policies which aid the sector: tax exemption till 2024, no VAT on E-commerce and planned IT park on 300 acres of land in Kaliakoir. It has also passed the ICT policy proposed earlier by BASIS.

Vision 2018 consists of : earning US$1bn from IT exports, create 1million IT professionals, add 10million internet users per year and contribute 1% to GDP .
