Apparel disputes arise mainly from wages: study
At a seminar on "State of labor tripartism in Bangladesh's garment sector and the scope of harmonious industrial and labor relations" at the Daily Star center, presented a study on the state of garments workers which reflected dispute reasons in the industry. It produced reports of almost 53% disputes arising from wage discrepancies. The dispute was with unpaid wages and overtime which highlighted the lion's share. around 19% of the disputes was also with a related category, namely salary and wage hike issues.
This was a study of 2014 and it presented the findings of 165 apparel sector disputes in the country, out a nationwide 246 for the year. This proportion is somewhat consistent with that of the previous 2013. Although easy resolutions could have been had, if there existed any equal representation of factory management, government representatives and trade union leaders, unions who possess a weaker negotiation strength. Worker's representatives remain sternly divided. Due to the lack of a local controlling body, specifically a lack of association with a single designated ministry, too much intervention produces little dispute resolve. With an effective tripartite committee, the apparel industry can function well and compete with global leader china, thereby harvesting tremendous revenue.
