Internet bytes: change for good, threats for not

The new CMO of Grameen Phone, is endeavouring to reduce the barriers of national connectivity to increase internet penetration, by introducing “EasyNet” service. This provides knowledge and hands-on learning about Internet to anyone, targgetted naturally to the rural population. It provides video tutorials, free internet sites and small data packs, without a data subscription. This is a refreshing step by one of the leading telecom operator of the country, GP to reach those 7.5 lakh internet unaware people and progress towards towards the slogan “Internet for all”.

In other comedy of Bangladeshi bureucracy, the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) and Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) has decided to remove the overhead cables from the areas Motizheel and Dilkusha, in the heart of the capital, containing the main commercial headquarters. This they have done through a notice through the newspapers, without informing the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) formally. Naturally, the ISPAB has threatened to remove their internet service provision in those critical areas if this ruling goes through.

To brief about the consequent blame-game that followed, the ISPAB official stated National Telecommunication Transmission Network (NTTN) were not being able to provide efficient technical solutions. Thus, ISPs have webbed out their cable networks in their own ways on overhead poles. A technical committee has been working to remove overhead cables for 2 years due to technical difficulties. The last-mile underground connection cost is set too high by the NTTN, which may allow smooth transmission for operating without overhead cables in the city, but this notice came unexpectedly and without formal notice to the ISPAB.
