Mobile inter-operator tariff debate

Mobile operators divided over inter-connection charges

Airtel and Citycell is to your right, where they are seeking complete withdrawal of inter-connection fees, while to your left, Robi, Grameenphone and Banglalink is in disagreement with the proposal. They counter-pointed that operating lower than the current one of the world’s lowest tariff rates and Robi opting for an increase in minimum voice call price.


The current call rate is between Tk 0.25 to Tk 2 per minute and the inter-connection fees is tk 0.22 a minute. Surprisingly, BTRC was also against the proposition of lowering this tariff. An official stated that with previous free call service packages, it rendered overuse from the youth. So the social context was provided as an admonishment.

With mobile phones a hot commodity in recent times and thereby a phone connection also a complementary product, regulations must be cautiously set not to upset the booming sector. Right steps have been taken overall as BTRC stated that mobile internet price has been reduced by 30% in the last year.
