25 tanners face legal notice as they fail to relocate factories
The relocation process of the Hazaribagh tanneries are going on to the more organized and better infrastructurally supported one in the industrial park in Savar. However, some factories are lagging behind and the government has decided to take action.
As of January 10, a 72 hour notice has been dispatched towards tanneries who were behind schedule, to express the seriousness of the matter. A list of 28 tanneries were documented. They are out of the 150 tanneries that have been pushing to be situated at the new site in Savar.
To save polluting the Buriganga and boosting leather export prospects with industrial safety and environmental measures, the government took up this project in 2003. Initially estimated at Tk 175 crore housing 155 tanneries in a 200 acre leather estate, costs now enormously stand at TK 1,079 crore.
Relocation of the factories is being prioritized on an expedite basis, but still it would take many of them by the end of this year to do so. At the Savar industrial park's end, the central effluent treatment plant is not fully operational yet. Only 50% of the work, referring to 2 of the 4 units, are ready for processing industrial byproducts. Accommodation of the 30,000 workers and families are also an issue that needs addressing entirely for a smooth relocation process.
